The shared experience of the coronavirus pandemic has levelled the playing field for all. This virus doesn’t choose, but for those who are already at risk the current inaction of governments to alleviate consequences will have long-term effects - particularly on the mental health of the youth.
In the UK, one in eight children and young people already have a diagnosable mental health condition. The pressures created by this crisis are not doing anyone any favours. With the cancellation of class, and the possibility of the loss of a summer holiday, it is important to come to a clear and coordinated approach to tackling the impact of the pandemic on this segment of the population, and particularly because these resources were not implemented before the virus, gaping holes in the system have now left many wanting. Especially at risk are the disadvantaged and marginalized. Organizations for the care of the youth have written an open letter to the UK government to bring about action to address these concerns.
