Pearson Edexcel offers two versions of English Language at IGCSE level, both of which are considered to be first language standard. They are not to be confused with English as a Second Language or English Literature.
The two versions of IGCSE English Language are English Language A and English Language B. As both of these are considered suitable for students who have a high level of language proficiency, students can choose the one which suits them best.
English Language A consists of two different papers. There is an anthology of non-fiction and fiction texts which students need to study in advance. In the exam, students will be required to comment on the language features employed by the writers of the texts. The requirements are significantly more than just straightforward reading comprehension activities. There are also two types of writing required in this version of English language. A piece of writing which is “functional” and which requires the student to target a specific genre and a piece of imaginative or descriptive writing.
English B is quite similar with a focus on writing for a specific genre and with argumentative or imaginative writing but there is no anthology of texts. Instead, there are two unseen texts, linked by theme which students will need to reading and write about.
IGCSE English (either A or B) is an important entry requirement when applying to universities abroad. It is a subject which demonstrates flexible use of the English language when it comes to both reading and writing.
Progression to A Level – International GCSEs enable successful progression onto A level and beyond.
Specification A requires preparation of set texts from an anthology and has an exam and a coursework route. Specification B does not require students to prepare specific texts and consists of a single 3-hour exam.
There are no prerequisites, but an I/ GCSE qualification in History would be helpful
