What are the prerequisites of this course?

First and foremost, to study an IAL in Geography you must have a keen interest in the world, an enquiring mind and the ability to analyse evidence and arguments. You do not need to have studied geography before, but previous study in geography may be useful, especially the international GCSE course. You will need to use transferable skills (cognitive, interpersonal, intrapersonal), especially skills in literacy.

What can I do with an A-level in Geography?

You can go on to university courses like an honours degrees in Geography, or go on to academic degrees like Politics, Law, Economics or Geology. An A-level in Geography also opens the doors to vocational qualifications in Media (Journalism) or Travel and Tourism. Usually you would expect to take three separate subjects at A-level if aiming for an academic degree so Geography goes well with Economics and Maths for those wanting to do academic degrees in either Economics or Geography.

The skills learned by studying geography are relevant to many careers, like journalism (especially travel journalism), national and local government, especially planning, and government administration, or careers related to geography in a variety of industry sectors especially energy and transport. Alternative paths may include working for NGOs in development scenarios or going into teaching.

For more information on specific university requirements related to A-levels, please see our A-levels FAQ page.

For more information on applying to UK universities, see our UCAS page.

If you are an international student taking A-levels the basic offer is made for 3 A-level subjects. It is very important when choosing these subjects that you understand what options you will have for university when the time comes. ITS has a long-established, highly experienced counselling team who can help you make these decisions and plan your academic course. But to start with, try out this excellent tool from the Russel Group which helps you experiment with your subject choices. Then come and see us.
