IGCSE English Literature is an excellent introduction to the requirements of studying English Literature. There are a number of different literary genres which the students are required to study and the assessments – which are essays – will help students to hone their academic writing skills.
Students need to study one play or drama – chosen from a list of about 5 or 6 plays. The choices are mostly 20th Century plays written by famous playwrights. It is also compulsory to read and study a novel, again from a list of 20th century texts.
There are two different tasks based on poetry. There is a poetry Anthology, which contains a range of poems, both modern and traditional, and candidates need to study these poems and be able to write about at least two of them in the exam. There is also an unseen poetry task which allows students to demonstrate their analytical skills.
Finally students need to study a literary heritage text. This text will also be taken from a list but will represent a traditional text, associated with the canon of literature. This text is usually more challenging.
English Literature is a good subject for students to have at IGCSE level. It helps to develop analytical skills. It also helps with the understanding of literary devices and it allows students to develop their academic writing style. If a student is considering studying English Literature at a higher level, or is likely to be taking IB DP English A, IGCSE English Literature is a useful subject.
Progression to A Level – International GCSEs enable successful progression onto A level and beyond.
There are no prerequisites, but an I/ GCSE qualification in History would be helpful
