20 years after Columbine, schools have gotten safer - but fears have grown

By ITS Education Asia

It is now 20 years since the tragedy of the Columbine High School shooting in the US, and this very thought provoking article was published in the New York Times to mark the anniversary of the tragedy.

“Present your driver’s license to be scanned and verified. Have your photograph taken. Pass your belongings through a metal detector. Welcome to your child’s school.” This clearly shows how many schools have changed their outlook on security since then.

However, Americans believe schools are more unsafe today than they were two decades ago, according to a new poll — even as federal data shows that by most measures, schools have become safer.

We can all be thankful nothing like this has ever happened in Hong Kong but everyone needs to remain vigilant.
