Children who rarely eat breakfast secure lower GCSE grades than classmates, study finds

By ITS Education Asia

A thought provoking article from The Independent.  It has long been said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a recent study shows this to be especially true for children.  This article, based on a study from the University of Leeds, quotes one academic as claiming that “‘Britain has a growing problem of food poverty’.

Researchers have found that secondary school pupils who eat breakfast regularly score nearly two GCSE grades above their peers who often miss the meal.   This study arrives at a time where an increasing number of school Heads are warning of growing numbers of children arriving at school hungry.

The academics, who surveyed hundreds of pupils in schools and colleges in Yorkshire, are calling for free school breakfasts to be given out in every state school in England.

What do you think?  Should schools provide breakfast for students free of charge?  Is this problem also present in Hong Kong?
