Choosing Respect


In light of the increasingly common issue of bullying, particularly in Hong Kong schools, research into its causes has found that children are copying what they’ve seen. Adults who behave poorly to each other, be it face-to-face, online or in the media have been identified as setting a bad example by 41% of children surveyed. From a developmental standpoint, young children look to their parents and other adults for a how-to guide on behaviour. If we want to eradicate bullying and start showing respect to others at school, we have to learn that it starts at home first, because whether bullying is in the playground, at the office or on the MTR – it is still not acceptable.
