A recent article in US News highlights the gap in US universities between getting students ready to join the workforce and imparting academic knowledge. This question is further complicated by the politicization of the issue and a lack of governmental funding. Most, however, seems to agree that university has become too expensive, leaving many university graduates in overwhelming debt after they finish their studies, along with a degree that fails to prepare them for a career.
This same question should be addressed by Hong Kong tertiary institutions. Should universities focus on imparting knowledge or should the focus be on making students more employable, or is there a workable middle ground? What do you think?
