The pandemic has meant that many students around the globe have been forced to do their schooling online. However, as illustrated in this BBC article the results of this move have not been equally successful for all and in fact many students are being failed by education moving exclusively online.
The vast majority of UK teachers (90%) say their pupils are doing less or much less work than they would normally at this time of the year. The report by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) says head teachers believe around a third of pupils are not engaging with set work.
Limited or no access to technology was a problem for around a quarter (23%) of pupils, school leaders told the NFER which raises particular concern about the impact of school closures on the learning of pupils from the most disadvantaged areas. Pupil engagement is lower in schools with the highest levels of deprivation.
It difficult to see exactly what the answers to this problem are. Obviously more must be done to help traditional schools which have zero experience with online learning. At ITS we have offered live online and blended live/online since 2012 so our students had no disruption this year. Goes to show what innovative thinking can do
