ChalkFace is always happy to share stories about exceptional teachers from around the globe.
Eric Hale was recognized recently as the top urban teacher in the nation by The Council of The Great City Schools and McGraw-Hill Education, who awarded him the 2019 Queen Smith Award.
Hale, from a disadvantaged background himself, and teaching in economically stressed neighbourhood has a lot to say about how his view of teaching is working for those children.
“You can be poor, but be rich in self-esteem and rich with supporters and rich with love from your family. That support is all you need to be successful,” he said.
Another great quote from the article: “How I teach is not traditional, but I get phenomenal results,” Hale said. “Everything I do is about building my kids’ emotional, social and then educational self-esteem. I am fostering leaders. One of the sayings in my classroom is: ‘Speak what you seek until you see what you say.’”
Congratulations Eric! Keep up the good work.
