Dating Apps and Children

By ITS Education Asia

Man using mobile smartphone.

This recent BBC article highlights efforts in the UK to help protect children from predators that use online dating apps. Dating apps Grindr and Tinder are to be asked to explain to the government how they protect children, after an investigation claimed minors are put at risk of sexual exploitation.

The statistics quoted in the article about child sexual exploitation that have occurred from the use of dating apps are quite alarming.  They include 30 cases of Child Rape and 60 instances of child sex offences including grooming, kidnapping and violent assault, with the youngest victim being only eight years old.

Parents need to be aware of their children uses of apps like these and Hong Kong government should join with other governments to pressure these tech companies to provide greater security for our youth.
