The Conversation has an article by researchers from Monash University questioning standards of writing in Australia. They reference test results, teacher reports and links between writing enjoyment and levels of literacy. It’s an interesting point because ever since we invented schooling, students have asked what is the point of learning this? The response to that is very personal and depends on your own ideology and experience. One school of thought is that what school teaches is useful in later life, but how to make a 14 year old see the connection between poetry and a business presentation? At the opposite end is for the love of learning, but will that motivate everyone? Very tricky problems - is this even an issue or are we being too conservative? Is writing as we know it on the way out?
