University education has long been seen as the ultimate goal for students growing up in Hong Kong. With limited slots for university places coupled with the mindset that life is not worth living if you don’t get a degree, it is no wonder that suicide rates among adolescents have increased over the last several years. However, the standard of education should not be compromised and universities cannot be expected to open up more slots if this means compromising the quality of the education they can offer. As a society, changing our attitudes affects our performance. Alternative routes to secondary and tertiary education (such as the courses offered at ITS) have proven to help students get to where they want to go, and achieve success.
