Canada’s Supreme Court has ruled that the province of British Columbia has failed in its responsibility to provide equal access to minority language education by underfunding its only French-language school board. To comply with the ruling, new French-medium schools will need to be founded in British Columbia, where over 60,000 speak French as their primary language, according to 2016 data— up 21% since 2006.
The wider implications are that the ruling for BC sets a precedent which may need to be followed across the country. Worth keeping an eye on if you foresee going to Canada for education.
