Here's to you, Mrs. Cheng. A former PR consultant turned Myanmar's musical miracle savior

By ITS Education Asia

Angel Cheng Hoi-Yan gave up her lucrative career as a public relations consultant to being a founder of the non-profit group “Build a Musical School” project. Like the namesake of her project, her goal is to develop a musical school for orphans left in poverty and facing threats of drugs in the heart of Myanmar’s “Golden Triangle.”

Cheng first started volunteering, teaching English and piano to some 30 children whose parents were either behind bars for drug trafficking or had died from drug abuse. By 2015, she had quit her job to devote her life to these orphans. Her goal was to provide a music school for these orphans.

Her mission met with several challenges, including lack of money and poor living conditions in the area. There were only three keyboards available at the orphanage, so she bought nine more out of her own pocket and from the money donated by her friends.

She eventually bought a piece of land and donated it to an orphanage to build the school. She has so far raised HK$4 million (US$510,900) to build the school, which already has 65 students. Her next challenge is to furnish it.

Cheng is organizing three concerts in Hong Kong from October 18-20 to raise further funds for the “Build a Music School” project.
