Keeping in touch in the time of Corona

By Ruth Puentespina

With social distancing fast becoming the norm across the world, building relationships  online is a novel experience that everyone is growing more accustomed to. The BBC recently published an article with tips to build better relationships remotely, and focuses on key areas that help people stay in touch without being physically together.

These include maximizing the use of online platforms through simple hacks such as adjusting your computer so that you are at eye distance on screen, or leaning into moments of silence so that closeness is promoted. Other tips include coming up with new ways to communicate, such as having new gestures to signal certain levels of intimacy.

Whatever the case may be, it is important to note that the shared experience caused by this pandemic is a great opportunity to strengthen interpersonal relationships, regardless of the proximity of one’s loved ones. Maybe it’s time for those secret handshakes of youth to make a comeback.
