The University of California application deadline for fall 2025 is fast approaching, and it's time to get your application in order as you’ll be competing with the annual 250,000 or so applicants to the UC system. To international students it can be especially easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain of what to do, which personal insight prompts to choose, and which schools to pick (most of my students apply to all of them). To help you navigate the process, here are five dos and five don'ts I always give students when applying to any college, particularly the unique University of California system.
First, let's start with the dos. Do take the time to thoroughly review the application requirements and ensure you have all necessary documents ready. This includes transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation – failure to tick this box will either get you straight-up rejected or annoying emails will be sent to your school-based university counselor. Trust me, taking the time to organize your materials ahead of time can prevent last-minute stress and ensure you don't miss any critical components of your application. Do start early to give yourself plenty of time to think, reflect, plan, and craft thoughtful responses to the personal insight questions. Starting early allows you to look deeply at your experiences and articulate them effectively in your essays. Do seek feedback on your essays from teachers, counselors, or trusted friends to ensure they are clear and compelling – not too many, just those you trust to be honest with you, even if it means they say your essays are trash and start again. This all-important feedback can help refine your narrative and ensure that your personality and achievements shine through. Do highlight your unique experiences and achievements, showcasing what sets you apart from other applicants. Admissions committees look for diverse perspectives and unique contributions, so make sure to emphasize what makes you stand out from the crowd. Trust me again, being weird, different eccentric, eclectic, or genuinely bonkers is much more fun than just being boring and good. Do double-check your application for accuracy and completeness before submitting it to avoid any last-minute issues – or better yet, employ a trusted professional to go through it at the last minute to make sure nothing gets missed. Trust me here again, as a thorough review can catch any errors or omissions, ensuring your application is as strong as possible.
Now, for the don'ts. Don't wait until the last minute to start your application. It takes a lot more than a few clicks and a paragraph or two of writing. Procrastination can lead to rushed, incomplete, and facile inauthentic submissions. Completing your application early gives you time to address any unexpected issues that may arise. Don't submit generic or clichéd responses to the personal insight questions. Admissions officers are looking for authenticity and depth. Tailor your responses to show off your true self and your unique journey. Don't overlook the importance of your extracurricular activities and community involvement, particularly in the case of the UC schools as SAT/ACT scores are not considered in evaluating if you are to be invited inside. The extra bits of your profile outside the classroom can provide valuable insights into your character and interests. Make sure to detail your contributions and leadership roles in activities outside the classroom. Don't ignore the application fee or fee waiver deadlines. Ensure you have the necessary funds or have applied for a waiver if needed. Managing these logistical details ensures that your application process goes smoothly. Don't forget to follow up on any missing documents or information requested by the admissions office. Keeping track of correspondence and deadlines is crucial for a complete and timely application.
