Mental health and the decline of the university experience

By Ruth Puentespina

A recently published report has found that a third of university students drop out due to mental health concerns, the foremost of which are the consequences of behavioral dysfunction coupled with the inability to cope with the pressures of school life.

Half of dropouts felt like a failure and regretted their decision to leave university. For all the work schools are putting in to ensure the quality of the education provided is of a high standard, a quarter of dropouts felt that they had chosen the wrong course which then negatively impacted their life experience.

One in five of drop outs also had issues with alcohol and drug abuse, which compounded their mental health situation. It is important for parents and higher careers counsellors to note that every student is different, and it is critical — both in the short and long term — to ensure that they are provided with the right information to make better choices.
