Student safety and well-being has always been at the forefront of improvements made in Education, but a recent article from NJ.com highlights the importance of specifying the inclusion of Mental Health safety as well. When students spend much of their time at school, it is important to equip teachers with the knowledge and awareness skills to identify potentially at risk students so as to take the necessary steps toward alleviating symptomatic behavior into a full blown mental health issue. A school district in the United States has applied training for its teachers to undertake a course that will teach staff to understand and respond to possible symptoms of mental illness and substance abuse. Although the training does emphasize that teachers cannot take the place of mental health professionals, it is important that they are properly equipped as frontliners in these interactions. This is a very important step toward addressing rising mental health concerns among the young adult population.
