It probably comes as little surprise to anyone that Hong Kong’s IB scores this year are worse than they have been in previous years. With all the disruptions to students schooling and the change to how grades were awarded this year deviations from past grade averages were to be expected, as reported by the SCMP..
The number of Hong Kong students bagging perfect scores in the International Baccalaureate (IB) exams dropped by nearly a third to 23 this year, with grading based on schoolwork after written tests were cancelled amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The figure was down from last year’s 34, despite the number of local candidates increasing slightly from 2,284 to this year’s 2,324. Hong Kong’s average score was 36.31 this year with a 97.9 per cent pass rate (the global average is 29.9, according to the IB).
We all hope that the coming year will offer greater stability to current exam-year students. However, students undertaking the second year of their IB diploma this year will have missed out on much of their first year syllabuses as a result of the disruptions. The knock on effect of the pandemic has a while to run yet.
ITS has a free consultation offer with impacted students and parents to assess whether they have fallen behind and how we can help ensure that they start the second year of the diploma not behind. Contact us on how we can help you live (in Hong Kong) or online.
