Oh nee! Foreign students in Netherlands may be required to take Dutch lessons

If you are planning on going to The Netherlands for your tertiary education, you’d better brush up on your Dutch. Recently, Dutch universities feel that the government may require foreign students to take compulsory Dutch courses. There has been rising concern in the Netherlands about the number of foreign students attending Dutch university and college courses, prompting many degrees to be only offered in Dutch. Education minister Ingrid van Engelshoven said “Dutch higher education system can continue to offer more courses and degrees in English, as long as it leads to an improvement in standards and that Dutch students are not forced out.”

Dutch universities may be concerned about their revenues, as the foreign body make up 11% of the student body. Compulsory Dutch lessons and tertiary programs only offered in Dutch will definitely decrease the demand.
