Poorer health, long-term consequences

By Ruth Puentespina

According to a new Australian study, teachers have identified one in five children as having emerging developmental needs when they first start schooling. This can translate to behavioural, emotional and cognitive issues that impact long-term learning and already sets them up for disadvantages.

Although not all health and developmental difficulties qualify children for special needs programs, it is important to address these concerns both at home and in early schooling so that any factors that could potentially affect learners are addressed as soon as possible.

Coming into a school setting that is ill-equipped to handle children with learning issues further harms the student — this is something that can be addressed at the governmental level given that the most ideal way to alleviate these issues and their long term effects would be to re-evaluate and improve how to equip and resource schools so that they can better support children with these emerging concerns, while keeping in mind the disadvantaged.
