Private tuition classes in Hong Kong are the norm for many students. However, it may be a surprise for some to know that private tuition in the UK is also quite common. In the UK, “More than a quarter of secondary school pupils in England and Wales have received private tuition, according to research published by the Sutton Trust.”
In London that number is near 50%. This has led to a social-mobility charity calling for financial support for disadvantaged families to have access to tutoring.
This does raise some interesting issues in relation to equity. What do you think? Should the government provide subsidies for private tuition to low income families in Hong Kong?
