School absenteeism and social anxiety

By Ruth Puentespina

The number of students diagnosed with anxiety in its many forms has increased in Hong Kong over the last few years. Although schools do have the responsibility to take care of their students, they are caught between a rock and a hard place when it comes to ensuring they are able to maintain the requirements set forth by the EDB, of which student attendance for advancement is a key factor.

Students with anxiety disorders find it increasingly difficult to function in a social setting, such as school. Not many schools are able to accommodate such students, inadvertently making them feel like social outcasts which feeds into their anxiety, creating a vicious cycle for both student and school.

ITS provides alternatives for students who wish to continue their studies and attain their academic goals while managing their mental health concerns.
