In the age of the #MeToo movement, it would be fair to expect that change has come at all levels. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case, particularly within university institutions in the UK. Universities UK, according to a recent article published in the BBC, has found that almost a thousand cases of sexual harassment and rape were reported last year with little to no substantial evidence of their resolution. Many of the institutions claim that measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of their students, yet put their reputation above this by sweeping these things under the rug. Complaints that have been reviewed have laughable consequences for the perpetrator - such as writing a four sentence apology or receiving a no-contact sanction to the student; these do little to address the actual concerns of keeping such sexual predators on campus. If the school system can’t protect its students and uphold rule and order within such prestigious institutions, it is high time the rules were changed in favour of the victims whatever cost to reputation that may entail.
