There is a recent push in Arizona to pass legislation that could see teachers fired for discussing controversial issues in the classroom. This opens up a very large can of worms. The very nature of teaching is to make students THINK; therefore controversial issues need to be discussed. I teach economics and the subject itself makes some of the issues discussed controversial.
The article states that “The proposal would also require that teachers provide students with materials detailing "both sides" of an issue.” Would this mean a teacher teaching WWII would be required to give the Nazi’s side, or a teacher teaching medical science would have to cover faith healing?
I do not think legislation can balance what is taught in schools with stopping individuals from promoting their own views.
