Taking children out of school for "Family Holidays" . . . Should it be allowed?

By ITS Education Asia

The UK, along with many other countries, has been facing the problem of what to do about parents that take their children out of school for family holidays. This is a difficult issue. Many parents cannot get holidays in the school holiday period, airfares are cheaper in non-school holidays or there may be an important family event such as a wedding happening at a different time of the year. However, taking children out of class disrupts their learning and puts them at an academic disadvantage.

Chris McGovern (Chairman of The Campaign for Real Education), said taking a child out of school for a "cheap holiday" could be a "remarkably selfish action".

What do you think? Should parents be able to take their children out of school for family holidays?
