The Coronavirus and its effects on children's mental health

By Ruth Puentespina

Childline has seen a huge spike in the number of counselling sessions related to the pandemic in the last week. With school closures and the disintegration of a structured day, children are experiencing heightened anxiety, and this has been coupled with the direct access to information that may not always be factual.

This highlights the importance of preparing frontliners who may need to do more work to help ease the psychological impact on mental health: the strain on population well-being could lead to a mental health crisis as a result of the pandemic. Consequently, school leaders are looking to provide more resources to students and parents to help them cope more effectively with the sudden shift to online learning and working from home. It is important to ensure the holistic health of each individual by catering to their mental, as well as their physical and emotional, well-being during this time of crisis.
