The Price of Perfectionism

In a city with fierce competition for limited places in many schools, Hong Kong parents often take extreme steps to ensure that their child stands out. This can create an environment where perfectionism is seen as a desirable trait. However, when a child spends their formative years living in a world of competition (with parents, siblings and/or peers), the often self-destructive cognitive cycles that develop are difficult to grow out of and can result in more serious mental issues.

Perfection is an ideal to strive for and pursuing it does have its share of benefits; however, it is important to emphasize that this comes at a mental cost. This cost is something that not everyone can afford.

The Guardian weighs in on this issue here.
