UK Department of Education introduces 10 new sports for GCSE and A-levels. Hurray?

By ITS Education Asia

In an effort to encourage exercise, the Department for Education is adding to their list of sports which students can take for the practical element of a GCSE or A-level in Physical Education. Adding new sports to the practical element is nothing new, but this year they include a range of unusual and extreme sports.  The new sports included are:

  • Acrobatic gymnastics
  • Figure skating
  • Futsal
  • Ice hockey
  • Inline roller hockey
  • Sailing
  • Sculling
  • Triathlon (only available at A/AS level)
  • Water polo
  • Windsurfing

This is great news for enthusiasts of the listed sports. However, the addition of the new sport programs poses additional problems, especially when it comes to funding of the programs and training required for PE teachers. Hockey equipment is expensive, and there aren’t many PE teachers with a background in figure skating. As well as geographical issues, not every school has access to bodies of water for windsurfing, and sculling.
