UK universities and the 'Brexit effect'

By ITS Education Asia

How will things change when Brexit finally arrives and how concerned should applicants to UK universities from Hong Kong be? A very interesting article in the SCMP asks this question based on research and opinion from the UK. The withdrawal of the UK from the EU could have significant impacts on UK universities, specifically in relation to funding and staffing. Currently, academics from the EU make up around 17% of the staff in UK universities, and there is already evidence showing an increase in resignations of these staff due to the uncertainty over Brexit. Brexit may also have an impact on UK universities’ research funding; one EU-funded program called Horizon 2020 has given UK universities 11 billion Euros since 2014.

Will UK universities make up for this drop in funding by charging higher international student fees? Time will tell.
