University students must take at least 10,000 steps a day in fitness push

Guangdong Foreign Studies University has recently introduced a new programme designed to try to improve the physical fitness of its students, requiring that they must take at least 10,000 steps per day using a fitness tracker, as well as at least 40 minutes of exercise at a sports stadium once a week.

Given growing obesity rates and the associated health problems, one can ask if Hong Kong institutions and schools should try something similar to encourage greater physical activity among students. There is much evidence that increased physical fitness not only reduces health problems but improves overall academic performance, as discussed previously on From The ChalkFace.
