While this article from The Standard focuses on the USA, it could equally relate to university towns and suburbs of many countries around the globe. What happens to a college town when the students disappear? Ithaca, a small upstate New York city, is finding out.
Most of the 24,000 students at Cornell University and 6,200 more from Ithaca College effectively vanished from local life in March, when the coronavirus pandemic struck, leaving behind struggling restaurants and shops. Locals still reeling from the outbreak and its resulting exodus are wondering when - or if - things will get back to normal.
An interesting and worrisome article. It appears that these small university towns are in for a very difficult time until a vaccine can be found and life may start to return to normal again.
