Receiving a waitlist offer from a university can be an overall exasperating experience. While it does mean you haven't been rejected, it also means you're stuck in limbo, faced with the prospect of never being able to find out just how far down that waitlist ladder you stand. Here's my take on how to navigate this situation effectively without huge amounts of anxiety and with some of your dignity still intact.
RULE #1. Acknowledge the waitlist offer as soon as you receive it. Precisely follow the admissions instructions on confirming your interest in remaining on the waitlist. This is crucially important for demonstrating your continued commitment to pay them your tuition money.
RULE #2. Do send a Letter of Continued Interest that is concise and to the point, expressing your enthusiasm for the university and reaffirming your desire to attend. Nobody wants to hear how you brought up your calculus grade or how you won some meaningless school spirit award that 95% of the other students received. Short of curing cancer or walking on the moon, nothing you can do is going to make any difference. There is ONE and only ONE statement to include, and it is the only one with any power at all: "If you accept me, I will attend." This clear and simple message shows the admissions committee your dedication and commitment to their institution.
RULE #3. Wait! It might be tempting to provide updates on your academic achievements or new awards. This is a terrible idea and really bad advice if you’ve received it. Most schools get thousands (if not tens of thousands) of applicants each year. Imagine how many emails they get from hopefuls each day. You’ve been waitlisted, which means you have something they like. If you must write that redundant letter, focus on expressing your genuine interest in the university and how you envision contributing to their community.
RULE #4. Be patient. Being on the waitlist requires patience as universities may not notify waitlisted students until after the official decision deadlines have passed. In the meantime, ensure you have a solid backup plan, then a backup plan for that backup plan. Expect the best but plan for the worst – the possibility that you might not get in. Accept an offer from another university to secure your spot for the upcoming academic year.
RULE #5. Focus on your academics and keep up with your extracurricular/supercurricular activities. While you definitely shouldn't update your dream school about these things, staying engaged will ensure you are in the best possible position if you do get off the waitlist and that you’re not idly sitting around thinking up ways to sabotage yourself along the way.
Above all, maintain a professional tone in all communications with the university. Respect their procedures and avoid excessive follow-ups. A well-timed, sincere letter of continued interest can make a positive impression without being overbearing. If you are uncertain about any of this, reach out to your friendly admissions consultant team at ITS Education Asia.
