On becoming a teacher:

In my early years of career, I was employed by the National Library Board of Singapore. I was deeply impressed by their national efforts and determination to nourish their human capital. Their motto, “building a learning nation” really strikes me. Since then, I have been working steadily as an economics tutor hoping that contribution to the betterment of our future generation will not only be economically productive but it will also lead to a better society for us in the long term.

I enjoy the opportunity to utilize my skills and knowledge to improve lives as well as a means to earn my livelihood. I enjoy the nature of my work which constantly gives me job satisfaction. Also, working with youngsters keep my mental age young and gives me positive thinking. Monetary reward is only a means to fulfil wants but if the job directly provides satisfaction, then it is a perfect life to live.

Other interests that reflect on my personality as a teacher:

Teaching, writing and surfing Internet indicates that I love to learn and express the knowledge that I have acquired. In fact, I used much of my personal saving on higher education in my early years. This also indicates my personal interests in education.

A person I find inspirational and why:

Steven N S Cheung. I did physical science in secondary school with no training in economics, but the publication, “Two Pennies Worth of a Tangerine Vendor” written by Cheung was so interesting that it changes my life. I obtained a good grade in Hong Kong A Level Economics decades ago via independent studies instead of going to a formal school. By using some of the ideas that I learned from this publication, I won a merit based full tuition wavier from the Illinois State which financed the study of my master program.

Carl Sagan said once you find something that you like, try to give all the best efforts to it. Everyone is endowed with unique abilities. Steady work will win the race. It is not to race with others but race with yourself. This physicist is a highly successful educator in that he spent his entire life in the course of educating the public. I believe that he enjoys the course of learning as well as teaching. I do, so I believe that he was motivated by the same factors

Top tip to younger self:

Do the things that you enjoy most, do it with your heart and it would pay off one day. This explains my choice of career.
