Quinton Leung

Music for Joy

About Me

I am Quinton, a current Y13 student at Li Po Chun United World College and incoming freshman at the University of Southern California. Growing up in Hong Kong has made me acutely aware of the threats that the natural environment faces from urban expansion, as well as the faults that lie within traditional education systems. As such, I am passionate about environmental conservation, scientific research, and educational empowerment.

Project Description

My project ‘Music For Joy’ stems from my own experience growing up in public estates. I often participated in activities and programmes provided by charity-run community centers in public estates, including camping, board game nights, arts and craft classes; however, I later realized that there was a lack of music education available.

Using my ties with the music community in Hong Kong, my project pairs qualified student teachers from secondary schools in Hong Kong with low-income, underprivileged children living in public estates for 1-1 and group lessons in piano, drums, singing, and more. My project has worked with charities such as BGCA, Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, YWCA, to broker music room agreements and training with social workers, and has serviced over 30+ children with over 500+ teaching hours.
