Derek Lai

MCB Sports

About Me

Derek is an empathetic and outgoing high school junior at Harrow International School Hong Kong, where he studies economics. In his free time, he indulges in a variety of hobbies, including basketball, trading, Model United Nations (MUN), cooking, baking, and Texas Hold'em with his friends. Driven by a strong sense of social responsibility, Derek regularly engages in charitable activities, such as cooking for the elderly and assisting with flu injections and health checks in government programs.

Deeply concerned about the rising issues of health and the lack of sports education in Hong Kong, as well as the lack of awareness and support for underprivileged refugees, Derek aims to tackle these problems by promoting sports and physical activity. His participation in MUN conferences has further broadened his understanding of socio-economic issues, leading him to engage in debates about the scarcity problem and rising inequality in society.

Project Description

MCB Sports is a non-profit sports education organization, led by 3 passionate sports enthusiasts, aiming to promote a better sense of health and well-being in Hong Kong and raise funds for the underprivileged, such as refugees, through their passion for sports. Participants of all classes will be able to participate in various sports events, such as 3x3 basketball tournaments and cross-country events. Donations and entry fees, in partnership with RUN HK, allow us to raise funds to support refugees with their basic needs and teach them essential skills to integrate into the Hong Kong community, such as job opportunities and workshops.

We are currently working on collaborating with schools in Hong Kong as well as attracting a group of sports enthusiasts like us to participate in such fun events where everyone can enjoy the nature of sports while helping people in need. We hope to host sports events regularly, keeping this sustainable, and emphasizing our vision of improving the community's well-being.
