First School students (Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 1) follow an enhanced version of the UK National Curriculum that is based upon the curriculum delivered at NLCS (UK). A team of warm and dedicated staff identify potential at an early stage, taking students above and beyond age-related expectations. Children are taught by a class teacher and supported by a learning assistant in a class size of up to 20 students. From three years old, students develop academically through both child and teacher-initiated activities, all within a structured setting.
Learning takes place through practical activities designed to inspire children, and to foster curiosity, inquiry and reflection. Exploration is encouraged in a range of contexts to help children develop their fine and gross motor skills, and to begin to understand themselves and the world around them.
There is a strong emphasis on trans-disciplinary learning, allowing children to make links across the curriculum and to discover their own interests in an atmosphere which encourages independence, personal responsibility, and care for others.
Lessons for Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten 1 consist of Mathematics, English, Physical Education & Health, Art, Drama, Music, Mandarin, Computer Science and Personal & Social Education. Students benefit from specialist teaching in Mandarin, Physical Education & Health and Music.
