Eileen has over 35 years’ teaching experience in secondary schools. Her main teaching subjects are History and English and she has taught these subjects at a range of schools in the UK, Australia and Hong Kong. She has also been an examiner (both setting and marking) for History qualifications in both Australian HSC and UK Pearson Edexcel A-level. Her HK experience gives her a deep cultural understanding of how Hong Kong Chinese students may need support for these subjects.
On becoming a teacher:
I value the importance of quality education and appreciate every child's right to education. Society will bene?t from its members being informed and engaged critical thinkers as well as lifelong learners. Whilst I always enjoy the subject content and skills, it is the ability to make a di?erence in students’ approach and success academically that inspires me in my career.
Other interests that reflect on my personality as a teacher:
I am an avid theatre goer and reader. These inform my practice. I have also studied the French language for the past 7 years and this gives me an empathy for those students who study a language other than their ?rst - particularly when the ?rst language is not phonetically based.
People I find inspirational and why:
I do value those who are the trailblazers. It takes a lot of courage to implement and innovate in education. I also admire those who work in the most challenging environments - perhaps where there are fewer resources or access to technological tools. I always ?nd inspiration in those who are passionate and courageous in the face of challenges, obstacles, adversity and opposition.
Top tip to younger self:
Relax.
