Kynthia has a degree in Chinese Language and Literature from the University of Hong Kong, and has over two years’ experience in teaching language and literature classes in schools in Hong Kong. At ITS, she prepares students for school interviews, and teaches Chinese Lang/Lit to all levels.
On becoming a teacher:
I had wanted to be a teacher since I was in secondary school. My class teacher was also my Chinese teacher, and she not only taught academically, but also the way to be an honest and genuinely good person. When I was about to go to university, she also shared with us her fun stories about her university days, and the stories were so interesting that they made me want to go to her alma mater (HKU), which I did! She was a big influence and inspiration.
In your field of study, which person do you most admire and why?
Definitely Lung Ying-tai. She’s a Taiwanese writer, a mother of two and was the Minister of Culture in Taiwan. In her books, she writes about how difficult it can be to balance everything she needs to do in her busy life. Most importantly, she does well in all aspects of her life and I think she is a role model for many.
What other interests do you have that reflect on your personality as a teacher?
I like travelling so much! Although Hong Kong is a modern city, I find Hong Kong too small to really be able to explore. When I was a student, I saved up for travelling by being very frugal in my spending, and despite missing out on some things, I really wanted to travel around the world, explore foreign cultures and meet some new friends! My teaching career has been extremely enjoyable as my students have come from different backgrounds, and we have been able to share our culture and inspirations with each other.
