About Me
Hello! I am Ann Ann Leung, a year 9 student at Lutheran Academy. From a young age, I have
been an outdoors enthusiast, frequently exploring nature in Hong Kong. As someone who has
always been passionate about the environment and sustainability, I became concerned about
the negative impacts associated with the food industry and consumer choices. It is my hope that
EcoScan can encourage more Earth-friendly grocery decisions and help shift Hong Kong
towards a greener future.
Project Description
EcoScan is an AI-powered mobile application aiming to promote sustainable grocery shopping
in Hong Kong. The app allows users to scan product barcodes in real-time using their phone's
camera. Through image recognition and machine learning algorithms, EcoScan can instantly
retrieve data on each product's carbon footprint, recyclability, and energy consumption based on
ingredients and nutrition information detected. This gives users insights into the environmental
impact of each grocery item, showing estimates of greenhouse gasses produced during
farming, transportation and manufacturing. Through education and incentivisation, Ecoscan
aims to encourage Hong Kong consumers to make better consumption decisions
Achievements Since UNITAR:
EcoScan has won the ‘Best Social Impact’ award at AI X HK Open Cup, receiving a seed
funding of $5000 HKD. The project is also currently one of the top 10 finalists in the IdeaPop
Pitching Competition.
