About Me
My passion for education emerged four years ago, when I was 12, when I visited Cambodia for a school project. I was one of the ten chosen students who had the opportunity to teach English at an elementary school in Siem Riep. I was appalled at the school environment: an evident lack of books, laptops, classrooms, teachers, and desks. That scene was very shocking for me as I lived in NYC and Tokyo, two developed locations, my whole life. Though the children weren’t provided with the proper environment, they were incredibly eager to learn. This made me curious as to why I could attend school each day, whereas children in underserved countries could not. This is when I first realized the educational discrepancies between developed and developing nations. I also realized that education can never be taken for granted and that I should be thankful and grateful that I can attain a high-quality education. As a high school GenZ student, I believe that every child deserves a high-quality education. This provoked my to found Tection, my initiative.
Project Description
Tection is an organization that aims to increase EdTech accessibility to grade 4-6 children in rural Cambodia. Our mission and vision, is to increase confidence and motivation for learning for grade 4-6 children in Cambodia by increasing access to technology. We have partnered with Dream Investment Japan, an organization based in Japan that works to share dreams to children in Cambodia. At my school for example, we use iPads but have to renew them once in three years, making the unused iPads a waste. Through our circular system, we will distribute unused iPads, with our partnership who will help us distribute the unused iPads collected at schools and our communities, to those in need in Cambodia. This project is beyond just donating iPads. I have previously updated grade 4-6 student workbooks based on the Cambodian English curriculum, incorporating partner work to foster communication between peers and parents to increase motivation for learning, like our mission & vision. These workbooks have been accepted and stamped by the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Japan.
