Beatrice Lee

Write and Create

About Me

I'm Beatrice Lee, a ninth-grade student from Hong Kong. I go to St. Paul's Co-educational College. I'm really curious and interested in a lot of things. I love talking about history and society. I also have a special love for astrophysics and writing poetry. I'm really into coding and computers too, especially how they're used in science. But what I'm most passionate about is helping people who are in tough situations and don't have the resources they need to succeed. I want to use my knowledge and skills to make a positive impact and help those who need it.

I've been involved in volunteering and leadership roles, like the Junior Chief Executives program and the UNICEF Young Envoys. During my time in the Junior Chief Executive program, I had the chance to tutor a student with dyslexia and see firsthand the challenges she faced with writing in Chinese. I did some research and found out that there weren't many resources available to help dyslexic students improve their writing skills. This inspired me to come up with a solution that would use my knowledge and expertise to help them.

Project Description

I created an Android app using MIT App Inventor. It's a fun game that lets users practice writing Chinese characters on a touchscreen. To make it even better, I added stickers and GIFs with positive messages to create a supportive environment. I also made sure to include features that would help dyslexic children, like using different colors for strokes to help with memorization and using vibrant colors to show different parts of words. I worked with the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong and other organizations to get feedback and make the app even better. I also had the opportunity to get guidance from experts in special education through a mentorship program. With their help, I want to expand my project and reach even more students with special educational needs.

In the future, I want to turn the app into a website so that more people can access it. I also want to add a chat forum where users can give feedback and share ideas. I hope this will create a supportive community and make it easier to improve the app. I'm also planning to upload the app to the Google Play Store and other platforms to reach more people. Maybe I'll even create a social media account to spread the word. I'm really grateful for the support I've received from organizations like UNITAR. They've helped me a lot and I'm excited to share my project with a wider audience and make a difference in society.
