Children who own books six times more likely to read above expected level, survey finds

By Sue Smith

This is a very interesting article because it clearly shows the link between the access to books and the enjoyment of reading. There are lots of books suitable for children of all ages and those children who are interested in books from a young age, because they have books or at least have access to books, are much more likely to develop a reading habit. While there are other factors that can also influence the development of such a habit, being exposed to books is vital.

And, as the article also says, that is why public libraries are such an important community resource. It is true that books are expensive and an avid reader needs a lot of books, but well stocked public libraries are another way to help children develop a love of books. Hong Kong libraries are fantastic, with books in Chinese and English and are updated with new books all the time.

I would say, for young children, real books are preferable to eBooks. The feel of a book in your hand and the experience of turning to the next page is part of the beauty of reading.
