Four C's for a better tomorrow

By Ruth Puentespina

According to the philosopher-historian Yval Noah Harari in his treatise on the future of humanity, Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration and Creativity are what children need to learn in the context of compassion and resilience in order to survive a rapidly changing world. As climate change is currently happening and with artificial intelligence on the rise, rote skills such as coding (although useful now) may be obsolete in the next few years or so.

What will always remain an important skill is being able to adjust and adapt quickly whilst showing care for one another. However, our current education is currently pointing in the opposite direction. We are sacrificing physical and psychological well-being for good grades and online interactions.

To prepare children for a better future, policymakers must work to address every aspect of their personhood — teach children to understand with their minds and their bodies, to learn from the difficulties of relationship and to engage with nature.
