The education sector in Australia has been a growing and significant source of export income for the country. Topping up universities with overseas students has given these institutions a lucrative source of income. The corona virus and associated travel restrictions have dealt a major blow to the industry. This article from The Standard reports on efforts to get the overseas students back.
After months of being barred from campuses due to travel restrictions, some international students studying in Australia are finally able to return. The pilot scheme will begin with the Australian Capital Territory and will allow up to 350 students from the University of Canberra and the Australian National University to return to campus.
The plan is to gather students across different countries in a single "hub destination" and fly them to Canberra in a charter flight. Upon arrival, students will need to undergo quarantine according to government guidelines. Once students complete their 14-day quarantine, they will be allowed to return to campus.
This will come as welcome news for the students who qualify for the scheme to get back to their courses. It seems to be a good first step to trying to get Australian universities open to overseas students again.
