Curriculum

ICHK Hong Lok Yuen is an accredit Forest Schools Leadership Centre and it makes full use of the location to ensure that engagement with the natural environment is an integral part of learning with students both learning in nature and about nature.

Chinese (Mandarin) is taught daily for both native speakers and those learning the language, with students being taught to read and write traditional characters.

As a member of the Positive Education Schools Association (PESA), wellbeing is central and students are taught the skills required to flourish both socially and emotionally.

Learning at ICHK HLY is active, engaging, rigorous, sometimes messy but always joyful and rewarding.

Inside The School

Parent Reviews

“Our son started in ICHK HLY since pre-nursery, and he is now in Year 5! We love the school because the curriculum and the teaching and learning are whole-person oriented, research informed, and evidence based. Learning is individually paced and open-ended here. It could happen in classrooms, on computers, in the playground, or the Woods outdoors. We are glad to see constant reflections and positive changes according to the best developmental and educational science out there to maximize learning. It takes professionalism and courage to stick to what the school believes in and swim against the current. It is a rewarding experience to witness our little one flourishing into this fearless and zealous learner over the years in this school, to which we are deeply grateful.” - Zhenlin Wang

“I would like to share the experience about our son switching from local school to ICHK HLY. Our son is very happy with his new school life and now he is much more independent and confident than before.” – Ivan Wong

“As a parent and educator, I entrust the staff at ICHK Kindergarten with my most precious treasure every day, so I am grateful for the loving care and guidance that our daughter receives. The academic, administrative and management staff see each child as an individual, with his/her own strengths and needs. My daughter has been blessed with amazing teachers who understand her talents as well as shortcomings and bring out the best in her with grace. My child has learned so much and continues to share with me all of the fun and exciting activities every day at the ICHK! Thank you, ICHK HLY, for such an incredible early childhood curriculum that engages and teaches at all steps of the day" - Dr. Eve NWAOGU

Specialist Programmes

Forest School : Outdoor learning is integral to what is delivered at the school. It is the first certified Forest Schools Leadership Centre outside of the UK. The campus is located in green and spacious surroundings, encircled by mountains. The on-site mini forest, woods and outdoor classroom enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills to enrich their experiences in nature as they explore the nearby National Parks.

Learning Support: The highly experienced learning support team provides a range of support and interventions for students who need additional assistance to access learning. There is dedicated room on-site for the use of students receiving Occupational and Speech Therapy.

EAL: As Hong Kong's first certified Bi-lingual and Multilingual Smart school all teachers are fully trained to meet the needs of BML learners. In addition, ICHK HLY offers an EAL booster programme for those students who require initial help in reaching a level where they can fully access the learning.

Chinese: Mandarin is offered to all learners for 1 period a day at both native and additional language level. Students are taught traditional characters.

Education Philosophy

The mission is to be a happy and healthy learning community empowering all members to flourish. This mission drives all that the school does. ICHK HLY firmly believes that children flourish when they engage in an education that balances academic, social, emotional, and physical growth. Learning should not be seen as a competition between these four areas of growth but embrace how they reinforce each other in developing happy and healthy individuals. At ICHK HLY, the focus and support of students’ social, emotional and physical growth are no less than the focus and support for students’ academic growth and development.

The school believes every child is an active agent in their own learning, not a passive recipient of knowledge. Students learn best when they have plenty of opportunities to work with, explore and deepen their understanding of the new knowledge and skills they have acquired. Students both literally and metaphorically get their hands dirty; taking what they have learnt and playing with those ideas in ways meaningful to them, whether that be solving novel maths problems, climbing a tree, writing a story, growing a plant, creating a piece of art, collaborating with friends to solve a problem or any other myriad of ways.

School News and Open Days

School News

The school has recently redeveloped its extensive outdoor areas. It is the first school in Hong Kong to have planted its very own mini forest using the Miyawaki method. The Outdoor Classroom and Woods area allow students to learn in a natural environment on site. New Jungle Dome climbing equipment enables students to develop both their physical and social skills.

All staff have undergone training with the Centre for Education of Bilingual and Multilingual Learners (BMLs). The school is the first in Hong Kong to be awarded Bilingual and Multilingual Smart School Certification. The award recognises both the knowledge and skills of the teachers and their deep commitment to helping students to flourish.

Why Choose International College Hong Kong – Hong Lok Yuen

When we talk to existing families about our school, two words keep coming up, community and joy. Parents are often amazed at the joy their children have at coming to school and the enthusiasm they have for learning.

Our outdoor spaces are unique in Hong Kong but more important than any facilities is the influence our commitment to outdoor learning and truly holistic education has on children's attitudes to learning.

Families at ICHK HLY feel truly supported and our size means that everyone feels part of our community. It is not just the students who develop lifelong friendships through the school but also the wider families.

If you are looking for a school where your child can truly flourish as a valued member of a nurturing community, ICHK HLY may well be the school for you.
