HONG KONG SCHOOLS OFFERING IGCSE EXAMS

Hong Kong schools teaching a UK or international curriculum typically offer one of two options for Years 10-11 (Grades 9-10): either the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) exams or the Middle Years Programme (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate.

IGSCE exams are well respected globally because they are set, marked (other than coursework) and moderated externally, by examination boards supervised by the UK Department for Education. The final grades are awarded by the exam boards, not the schools. The two exam boards most commonly used in Hong Kong are Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). ITS Education Asia is a registered exam centre for Pearson Edexcel: it is possible for students to study for IGCSEs with us and then to sit the exams in our centre. Some of our candidates study for all their IGCSEs at ITS, while others attend mainstream schools and come to ITS for tuition in an extra subject or two. IGCSEs constitute an excellent starting point for students who wish to prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP) or A-levels, not least because they provide excellent practice in sitting public exams. The choice of subjects offered is extremely wide. As each subject is examined independently of other subjects being taken, it is possible to retake a subject to obtain a higher grade if necessary.

Parents relocating from the UK may be more familiar with GCSE exams than IGCSEs. GCSEs are fundamentally very similar to IGCSEs. The main differences are that IGCSE syllabuses may have a more international focus and that assessments are typically more exam-based than for GCSEs.
