Curriculum

MCPS offers an Educationally Harnessed Play Programme based on the U.K.’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, setting clear expectations for each stage of a child’s developmental journey. Pupils learn through both structured and free play, with a balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities.

The holistically balanced curriculum covers seven interconnected EYFS “Areas of Learning and Development”: Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Communication and Language, Expressive Arts and Design, Mathematics, Literacy as well as Science (“Understanding the World”). These areas are designed to nurture a child’s curiosity, stimulate their enthusiasm for learning and support their social and emotional development.

A prominent feature of MCPS’ bi-lingual curriculum is the equal exposure of children to both English and Chinese culture and language. Children are taught in small classes by highly qualified native speaking teachers and engage in regular PE and music classes, embedded in the core curriculum.

The curriculum is complemented by the Pre-School’s very unique and successful Forest-Beach School programme, where pupils learn in an outdoor classroom setting in and about the natural environment.

The Pre-School offers holiday camps as well as after school extra-curricular activities like music exploration, dance, Taekwondo, integrated STEM courses and science workshops.

Inside The School

Parent Reviews

“My daughters simply love Forest-Beach School. Every time they are excited to go there, and after the day is over, they immediately start looking forward to the next time. Last time was especially memorable because it was raining a lot. My daughter saw how the ground changed to mud and felt it with her hands. It was a precious experience as it showed me what “nature” means to her. I find it particularly thoughtful that on the day after Forest-Beach School, the children play in the classroom with items that are linked to the previous day’s experience. My husband and I are very happy for our daughters to be part of MCPS as the school approaches diversity by addressing the true virtues: fairness, justice and humanism. ” - Mrs Mitsuyo Murata, parent of a K1 and K2 pupil

“I am impressed by the endless learning opportunities at MCPS. From Forest School to indoor play, where children cycle up and down on bikes, dress up and act, paint and measure with sand, oatmeal, water or other colourful mixtures - the teaching is of the highest quality. Every day the teachers create new learning experiences for the children. In this environment, the Reggio Emilia philosophy truly comes to life.” - Mrs. Gabrielle Liu, mother of a Pre-Nursery and a K2 pupil

“Malvern College Pre-School really does a fantastic job in terms of online learning. My son has made significant progress while at home – he has been keen as usual, loves to take initiatives, and is eager to learn. Thank you for keeping him engaged during times of online learning!” - Mr An-Che Hou, father of a K2 pupil

Specialist Programmes

At MCPS, a child’s learning journey is not confined to the classroom. The Pre-School is one of the first schools in Hong Kong to operate a Forest-Beach-School Programme, managed by Level 3 qualified Forest-Beach-School leaders. This outdoor learning programme is built on a philosophy of child-led learning, with a focus on all five senses, and runs in all safe weather conditions.

Nature, the outdoors and open spaces become the children’s temporary classroom, with educational sessions designed around a theme typically linked to the curriculum. Teamwork, intra- and inter-personal skills are developed through games and group activities such as hide-and-seek or scavenger hunts. Self-esteem, individual practical and intellectual skills are enhanced through supervised activities like shelter building, tool handling or lightning fires. By undertaking a range of outdoor projects and games, children learn to think, ask questions and problem-solve while developing important communication, collaboration and leadership skills. Forest-Beach School also fosters an appreciation and understanding of nature and the environment.

Classes run every two weeks, with pre-arranged bus transportation from the campus to Forest-Beach School learning sites and back. Each child is accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver, making Forest-Beach School sessions a strong bonding and learning experience.

Education Philosophy

All Malvern schools share a common ethos defining our philosophy of education. MCPS actively promotes a set of well-tested values called the Malvern Qualities: humility, self-awareness, open-mindedness, independence, ambition, risk-taking, integrity, curiosity, collaboration, kindness and resilience. These qualities are the foundation for Malvern’s transformational educational experience and prepare pupils for success in life beyond school.

MCPS adopts a highly personalised approach to learning and teaching, placing the child at the centre of everything it does. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational philosophy, MCPS views the ‘environment as the third teacher’: this approach perfectly complements the holistically balanced EYFS curriculum with its focus on inquiry and play-based learning. The Pre-School solicits a balanced development of creativity, academia, sports and outdoor activities, including the successful Forest-Beach School programme.

Drawing upon over 150 years of British boarding school heritage, MCPS strives to instil a strong sense of community and responsibility amongst its members. Pupils are encouraged to challenge boundaries, think critically and act collaboratively. Malvernians develop a clear sense of worth, purpose and fulfilment, ready to take opportunities as they come and, with ambition, to make a positive difference in the world.

School News and Open Days

Why Choose Malvern College Hong Kong

MCPS’ world-leading Early Years educational programme is designed to nurture the potential in every child via a range of stimulating and developmental learning experiences. Research has shown that child-centric, active, play-based learning develops levels of skill, knowledge, conceptual thinking as well as confidence that cannot be achieved in a more formal classroom setting.
The Pre-School’s beautifully designed campuses feature natural elements and open-ended play equipment, inviting the children to crawl, roll, climb and run. This in turn stimulates the children’s five senses and triggers their inquisitive nature about the world around them. Highly qualified and experienced educators, small classes and impressive teaching facilities give pupils the best opportunities to succeed.
MCPS harnesses the latest educational technology to support learning and teaching and sets a natural foundation for a child’s immersion into the primary school years, either at Malvern College Hong Kong or any other International Primary School.

Open Days & Seminars

Selecting the right Pre-School for a child is a complex process, and we believe it is very important for parents to be able to connect with the pre-school and ask questions prior to applying. Therefore, Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong regularly holds small group information sessions for prospective parents to learn more about our school, curriculum and admissions procedure. Experienced educators and senior management members will be present to answer any questions prospective parents might have. Malvern Meet information sessions are conducted in English. New Program for 2021/22

MCPS values the home-school partnership and recognises parents as a child’s first teacher. With a view to perpetuating the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom, the school has developed a comprehensive “Parenting Programme” which is designed around educational key areas. Parents are always welcome to visit classes or to join our teachers in their activities by prior arrangement with the school. We also encourage parents to volunteer to accompany pupils on class outings, come into school to read stories or to share their expertise. Out principal and teaching staff hold regular “Parent Insight” sessions to share knowledge and best practices on a range of educational and developmental topics.

MCPS uses Class Dojo as a “one-stop shop” communication platform for parents, and weekly newsletters with photos are sent by the end of each week. The Portfolio of Learning reflects the progress in the EYFS Seven Areas of Learning, and Celebration of Learning events as well as parent-teacher conferences are held at the end of each term. All pupils receive mid-year and end-year progress reports.

The school holds regular events like sports day, school picnics, Easter bonnet parade, Christmas and Chinese New Year celebrations as well as weekly school assemblies. Our pupils enjoy going on excursions to local parks, museums and theaters.
